Did you know that the District 54 Education Foundation was founded 30 years ago? A small group began holding organizational meetings during the summer of 1987, and the Foundation was officially incorporated that fall.

While the Foundation’s focus has shifted over the years, the mission has remained the same:  to generate and distribute financial and other resources to District 54 schools to enhance the quality of education and provide students with extended learning opportunities.

Over the past three decades the organization has donated a total of nearly $1 million to fund various initiatives in support of students, including:

·         Staff grants to foster innovation and creativity in teaching and learning;

·         STEM enrichment programs so that all students have the opportunity to become innovators, practice collaboration and be prepared for exciting opportunities in their futures;

·         Grants to students from financially struggling families so that they may participate in extracurricular activities; and

·         Breakfast programs for students from financially struggling families to ensure that they begin their day ready to learn. Donations of any size to the Foundation’s Food 4 Thought program, which is raising funds to provide breakfast programs at all District 54 schools, directly impact students’ lives. It costs just $1 a day, or $5 a week, to provide a healthy breakfast to a student; and a $200 donation provides breakfast to a child for a full school year. Businesses, organizations and individuals can also sponsor an entire school for a full year with a donation of $10,000. For more information about Food 4 Thought, visit

The Foundation is grateful to all of the staff, parents, community members and area businesses and organizations who have helped us to fulfill our mission over the past 30 years, by donating funds, sponsoring and/or volunteering for one of our fundraising events such as Mardi Gras or our golf outing, participating in a Foundation dine-and-share or shop-and-share event, or serving on the board.
