When given opportunities to explore Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) in collaborative and supportive environments, research indicates girls gain confidence and are more likely to pursue these areas during high school and post-secondary work. The GEMS program will continue to service students in grades three through eight, but will create systemic STEM programming at each of the district’s twenty-seven buildings through clubs designed to accommodate twenty to twenty-five. Parent and community involvement will be supported through evening events where students can demonstrate their learning

At the junior high level, GEMS students will also have the opportunity to expand their experiences through the Science Olympiad, a competition consisting of a series of twenty-three team events in events reflecting the ever-changing nature of genetics, earth science, chemistry, anatomy, physics, geology, mechanical engineering and technology.  By combining events from all disciplines, Science Olympiad encourages a wide cross-section of students to get involved.  Emphasis is placed on active, hands-on group participation.  Through Science Olympiad, students, teachers, parents, principals and business leaders bond together and work toward a shared goal.
