Schaumburg Township Elementary School Foundation

Dennis Quinn – Legacy of Leadership

Posted Monday, August 18th, 2014

It is with a sad heart that I write this announcement of death of former Schaumburg Township Elementary School Chairman Dennis Quinn.

Dennis and his wife, Barb, initially became involved in School District 54 by donating their time and resources to the PTAs at Nerge and Mead, the schools their children attended.

In 1998, Dennis joined the Schaumburg Township Elementary School Foundation. Five months after joining, he became the Foundation chairman, a position he held until 2010. He was well known for his ability to not only raise funds to support our schools, but also to cultivate relationships between educators, business partners and the community we serve.

I first met Dennis in 2003, when I attended the Foundation’s Mardi Gras for the first time as a new administrator in District 54. As I became more active in the Foundation, I was fortunate to spend more time with Dennis and witness firsthand his dedication to the children of District 54.

In 2002, District 54 nominated Dennis for the Illinois State Board of Education Those Who Excel Award for volunteers, an award he received. More recently, the Foundation began offering the Dennis P. Quinn Super Grant, in recognition of the support Dennis has given to the Foundation. This grant, of up to $10,000, is awarded annually to a group of district employees to foster creative approaches to learning.

The Foundation’s Memorial Grant began under Dennis’ leadership as chairman. Children from families facing financial difficulties can apply for this grant to cultivate academic, cultural or athletic interests outside of the school day. These grants are funded, in part, through contributions received in honor of individuals who have passed away.

Although I am saddened that our community has lost a great man, I am honored to be able to donate to the Foundation in his name, to keep his legacy alive.

For anyone interested in attending, the family announces that visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, August 22, and from 9:30 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 23 at Calvary Community Church, 1000 S. Springinsguth Road in Schaumburg. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. at Calvary Community Church.
